Ishi recorded hundreds of hours of Yahi song during his time in San Francisco between 1911 and 1916. The original recordings were made on wax cylinders, the precursors to vinyl records; Ishi made them by speaking into the record player’s trumpet. The original wax cylinders have been lost, but the Phoebe Apperson Hearst Museum of Anthropology at U.C. Berkeley has stored copies on reel-to-reel tapes. Cassettes of some excerpts are available from Wild Sanctuary Music.
